FREE monster crochet pattern - Gregory, the friendly monster amigurumi

Here you’ll find my free monster crochet pattern!
It’s a simple, easy, and, I'm happy to say: quick crochet project to make.

My journey with chunky yarn hasn’t been the longest or deepest relationship, but I really enjoy making these soft, huggable creatures.

Before we start, you should know Gregory isn't the only monster in my plushie family! If you love him, you’ll want to meet his friend:

So let’s crochet a friendly, cute little monster together!
Let’s get started! 😊

If the toy is made for children under 3 years, instead of using safety eyes, embroider them!

Materials and supplies:

  • Size of the toy, crocheted with the recommended yarn is approximately 14-15 cm tall.

  • This toy was made of 100% Polyester yarn which weights is 100g/120m

  • Fiber filling

  • Big tapestry needle for sewing details together, scissors

  • 2 pieces of 6 mm safety eyes

  • 4 mm crochet hook

Abbreviations:

I use US terms in all my English crochet patterns.

ch - chain

st - stitch

sl st - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

inc - increase

dec - decrease

() - number of stitches in a round/row

(...)* - repeat instructions between * *

FLO - crochet in the front loop only

BLO - crochet in the back loop only

  • The toy is worked in continuous rounds – do not join after each round.

  • If you feel it is necessary, use stitch marker to follow the lines.

  • Using invisible decreases makes the toy more beautiful.

Free monster crochet pattern:

In the next round join the tentacles. Join as shown on the pictures.

4. 3 sc crocheted together with one tentacle, (sc, inc)*3, 3 sc crocheted together with the other tentacle, (sc, inc)*3 (24)

In the next round crochet on the outer side of the tentacles.

5. 3 sc, (sc, inc, sc)*3, 3 sc, (sc, inc, sc)*3 (30)

6. (2 sc, inc, 2 sc)*6 (36)

7-12. sc into every st across (36) (6 rounds)

Insert safety eyes between rows 9-10, 2 sts apart of each other.

We will create the outline of the teeth and mouth. You can find the correct position as follows: locate the stitch between the eyes, then count 7 stitches to the right and 7 stitches to the left from this point. Mark the start and end points of the mouth and teeth, and crochet BLO sc in these stitches.

13-14. 4 sc, BLO 15 sc, 17 sc (36) (2 rounds)

15. (5 sc, inc)*6 (42)

16-19. sc into every st across (42) (4 rounds)

20. (5 sc, dec)*6 (36)

21. (2 sc, dec, 2 sc)*6 (30)

22. (3 sc, dec)*6 (24)

Stuff the monster.

23. (sc, dec)*8 (16)

24. dec*8 (8)

Fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Teeth & mouth:

Teeth: Join the white yarn on the right side of the toy (facing you), at the 12th round in the second free stitch. At the end of the row, you should have one free loop on both sides of the tooth, which will be needed to form the mouth.

ch 3, turn, sc into the first st, sl st into the next 4 sts on the body,

ch3, turn, sc into the first st, sl st into the next 3 sts on the body,

ch 3, turn, sc into the first st, sl st into the next 4 st on the body

ch 3, turn, sc into the first st, sl st into the next sts on the body

Fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Mouth: Join the light green yarn on the right side of the toy (facing you), at the 12th round, right next to the teeth. Ch 1, go down to the free loops on the 13th round, and sc into them. At the end of the row, make a sl st beside the teeth at the last st of the 12th round.

Fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Eyebrows: With black yarn, embroider the eyebrows. Mark their positions with pins above the eyes, then embroider them as shown in the pictures.
