How to start crocheting: a beginner’s guide

Have you ever thought about learning how to crochet?

I remember when I was a child, I held the crochet hook so tightly that my hand would get sore by the end of practice. So, yes—it can feel overwhelming at first! Especially when you're unsure of how to choose the right supplies. And then, how do you turn that straight yarn into a 3D amigurumi? If you’re just starting out, you’re in the right place to learn about the best supplies for your first project! Here are some useful tips to help you confidently begin your crochet journey.

1. Choosing the Right Yarn

Walking into a yarn store can feel like stepping into a wonderland of colors and textures. Honestly, this is my favorite part! Those colors and the softness give my soul a recharge and spark new ideas. If I grab a yarn, I usually don't see just the yarn—I see creatures, dolls, cute amigurumi animals, etc. You should try it! :) But sure, it is hard to choose if you just started! I recommend starting with a thicker, light-colored yarn. Bulky yarn is great for learning the basics before you move on to finer yarns. 2. Picking the right crochet hook

Your yarn label usually tells you the best hook size to use. Picking the wrong size can mess with your project: a hook too big for your yarn will leave loose stitches and gaps, which means the filling could fall out of your amigurumi. A hook that’s too small can make stitches tight and hard to work with. If the stitch is too tight, you won’t be able to insert your hook! Once you’ve found the right size hook, don’t forget to check the handle. They come in silicone, wood, plastic, and other materials with various shapes. 3. Use Stitch Markers

When you're starting out, stitch markers can be a lifesaver. They help you keep track of the beginning of each round. If you don’t have one, a small piece of contrasting yarn works just fine to mark your place.

4. Keep a Relaxed Grip

Beginners often grip the hook and yarn too tightly, leading to stiff stitches and hand fatigue. Try to keep your hand relaxed and let the yarn glide smoothly. If you need tips on how to keep your hands relaxed while crocheting, check out this post!

5. Practice, Practice, Practice!

It’s totally normal to struggle at first, but don’t give up! Everyone starts as a beginner. With patience, you’ll improve. Look for patterns that practice basic amigurumi stitches like the magic ring, slip stitch, single crochet, increase, and decrease. If you master these, you’ll be able to make any amigurumi! One of my most beginner-friendly patterns is a little elf made from simple shapes. Once you crochet this, you'll be ready to take on bigger projects! :) Click here for the free pattern!

6. Work from the Center of the Yarn Ball

Instead of pulling yarn from the outside, start from the inside of the skein. This prevents the yarn from rolling around and getting tangled.

+1: Remember to Have Fun!

Crocheting should be an enjoyable and creative process. If you start to feel frustrated, take a break, sip your favorite drink, and try again. The key is to enjoy the journey and celebrate your progress.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a confident crocheter.

Happy crocheting!
