How to choose the best crochet hook for your projects?

If you are a beginner at crocheting, one of the most important things is that you choose the right crochet hook. Hopefully, you have already chosen the yarn and are ready to start your first project. If not, READ THIS post first. The reason is simple: you need to choose a crochet hook sized appropriately for your yarn.

So, if you have your yarn, let’s dive into the world of crochet hooks! :)

1. Pick the right hook size:

In my opinion, a beginner crocheter should use a hook sized between 3-4.5 mm. This range will give you the feeling that your amigurumi isn’t too tiny, but you can still see the stitches.

Your crochet hook size will affect the tension and overall appearance of your work. If you choose a bigger hook than your yarn needs, your amigurumi will have holes, and the fiber filling may come out. I don’t think you want that! :) But if you choose a smaller hook, you won’t be able to work the stitches properly because they will be too tight (szorosak).

I suggest you always check the instructions on the yarn! Usually, they provide a range, such as 3-5 mm. Since you’re making amigurumi, you should use the smallest one, and your work will be stunning! :)

Smaller hooks (2mm-4mm) – Best for fine yarns and intricate projects like lace or doilies.

Medium hooks (4.5mm-6mm) – Great for worsted weight yarns, perfect for most standard projects.

Large hooks (6.5mm and above) – Ideal for chunky yarns, blankets, and quick projects.

2. Consider the material

Crochet hooks come in various materials, each with unique benefits:

  • Aluminum – Smooth and fast, great for most yarns.

  • Plastic – Lightweight and affordable, but may bend with use.

  • Wood or Bamboo – Warm in the hands and provides better grip, ideal for slippery yarns.

  • Steel – Used for fine, lace projects.

Once, I received a set of handmade crochet hooks as a gift. They are really beautiful, but the hooks are very fragile, so I can’t use them. It’s sad because I could have gotten a set of useful, high-quality crochet hooks instead, but I truly appreciate that my hubby wanted to get me the most beautiful hooks he had ever seen. :) So, outer beauty isn’t everything! Go to a yarn shop and ask the sales associate to let you try the crochet hooks in your hands! It’s possible that you won’t find the perfect hook at first sight, but don’t worry! If you really get into crocheting, you’ll end up with a loooooot of crochet hooks :)

3. Look for ergonomic features

If you crochet for long periods, an ergonomic handle can help reduce hand fatigue and wrist pain. These hooks often have soft rubber grips or contoured handles for comfort.

Where I live, we have a few options to choose from, and I have two favorite brands for crochet hooks: DMC and Tulip. The Tulip crochet hooks are a bit expensive, but if you crochet for many hours (and hopefully get addicted to crocheting! :) ), they will provide a great experience. DMC is cheaper, but they are no less valuable than Tulip hooks! They have a great silicone handle, and you can get them in various sizes.

Final Thoughts

The best crochet hook depends on your personal preference, the type of yarn, and the project at hand. Experiment with different materials and sizes to find what works best for you. A comfortable hook can make crocheting more enjoyable and help you crochet with all your heart! :)
