Once, my husband went on a trip and brought me a funny little toy: a reversible Red Riding Hood doll. On one side, it was Little Red Riding Hood, and when you flipped it over - surprise! - there was the wolf dressed as grandmother. I absolutely loved it. It was clever, playful, and full of personality. I still have it today, and my kids enjoy playing with it.

That little flip doll inspired me to start designing my own reversible crochet patterns. I wanted to capture that same feeling of surprise and joy, but in the form of amigurumi.

This was my very first topsy-turvy creation, born in 2021. I've always felt a connection to the magical way kids see the world, and I wanted to create something that let them hold the changing of the seasons right in their hands.

To make the year complete, I had to bring the warmer seasons to life! I won't lie, this doll was a challenge. I crocheted and re-crocheted several versions until the transformation felt seamless and delightful. I think all that hard work paid off!

The best part? The supplies are the same for both of these beauties.

• Skill Level: Intermediate (You got this!)

• Finished Size: 8 inches (20 cm)

• The Goods: mercerized cotton yarn (50g / 125m), a 2.5 mm hook, fiberfill, a needle, scissors, and any fun bits like beads or ribbons you want to add for bling!

3. The interactive weather reporter doll

After designing the two seasons dolls, I took a short break from the world of reversible toys. But in 2024, a new idea sparked, I felt it was time to create another educational flip-flop doll, one that was even more interactive for curious kids.

Meet the doll that doubles as your child's very own weather station! This pattern isn't just about making a toy, it's about creating a daily ritual of observation and play.

The magic is in how a child can use it. They simply look out the window and ask:

• Is it day or night? Flip! They turn the skirt to reveal the day or night skirt.

• What's the weather like? This is where the real fun begins! They can add crocheted accessories to match what they see. Is the sun shining? Add the sun. Is it a bit gloomy? Pop on the fluffy cloud. Is a storm brewing, or a beautiful rainbow appearing after the rain? etc.

And voilà! They have perfectly set the weather for the day.

And now for my latest creation, a design that brings classic fairytales to life with a single flip!

On one side, you have a lovely, graceful princess, dreaming of her happily-ever-after. She even has her tiny, crown-wearing frog companion by her side, waiting for a magical kiss.

But every good fairytale needs a little mischief, right? With a flick of the wrist and a flip of her skirt... POOF! She transforms into a mysterious witch. And she’s not alone, she has her loyal, cute black cat to help her.

I designed this doll to be a storyteller's dream. It’s an open invitation for kids (and you!) to weave their own tales of magic, curses, and true love's kiss. Who is the hero? Who is the villain? With this doll, you get to decide.
